Every year, more than 10 million dogs and 4 million cats in China are captured and slaughtered by the illegal meat trade. The majority of these animals are strays. These frightened, often sick, and hungry animals fuel the black market trade. This is why Duo Duo Project is leading critical spay and neuter initiatives across China.
By addressing stray overpopulation through sustainable, humane spay and neuter programs, we are tackling one of the trade’s biggest supply sources. We are also working to reduce demand for dog and cat meat through community outreach and culture-conscious education.
When the Yulin Dog Meat “Festival” first began, an estimated 10,000 dogs were killed each year for this cruel event. In recent years, that number has dropped significantly to approximately 3,000. Even one life lost is too many, but this decline proves that hearts and minds are changing. And it’s why our important work must continue.
