Duo Duo Project Brings Its Mission to London: A California-Based Nonprofit Aims to End the Dog and Cat Meat Trade

In a world where the bond between humans and canines spans thousands of years and transcends cultures, it is difficult to comprehend that millions of these loyal companions still face a grim fate in the dog and cat meat trade. This brutal practice, though increasingly opposed, continues in certain areas, particularly in China, where the mass slaughter of dog and cats persists. But change is on the horizon, and the Duo Duo Project, a nonprofit headquartered in California’s Bay Area, is leading the charge to end this inhumane industry.

In Chinese, the phrase “duo duo” means “abundance.” Sunnyvale resident Andrea Gung named a mixed breed that she rescued from the dog meat trade in China “Duo Duo,” as she wished an abundance of love for her canine pet. In 2013, Gung founded the Duo Duo Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Sunnyvale to advocate for humanity against China’s dog meat trade.

Yulin festival: Doubts over 'dog meat ban'

According to US campaigners, the Yulin dog-eating festival in China, notorious for its animal cruelty, will this year be banned from selling dog meat. Yet doubts remain over what has been said, and some vendors told the BBC they had heard nothing about a ban. Eating dogs is not illegal in China but the annual festival in Guangxi draws widespread domestic and international opposition each June.
