TOURS

Volunteers are welcome to visit our dog shelter in an exciting and rewarding 8 day trip to China. You will be traveling, sightseeing, experiencing authentic Chinese culture and giving back to the communities of the different destinations that you visit.

Day 1 - Beijing

THE ITINERARY.

Arrive any time.

​

Fly into Beijing capital airport where your English speaking guide will meet you. Transfer back to the hotel in downtown Beijing (the drive takes approximately 1.5 hours). Spend the afternoon resting in the hotel and exploring locally.

Day 2 - Beijing

Start the day with Breakfast in the hotel, followed by a visit to Tian'anmen Square. Explore one of the world's largest public squares, home to the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, and more.

 

Next we will visit the iconic Forbidden City. Covering 72 hectares, it was the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government for almost 500 years. While here, we will also stop at the the Palace Museum, which is home to over 1.8 million pieces of art mostly from the imperial collection of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

We will enjoy lunch in a local Chinese restaurant, and then spend the afternoon visiting the Temple of Heaven. Built in 1420 with a total area of 270 acres, this is the largest building for religious worship in China, which was originally used by the Ming and Qing emperors to pay homage to Heaven and to pray for a year of rich harvest.


Tonight, enjoy some authentic Chinese cuisine at a local restaurant. Afterward you might choose to venture into the Beijing nightlife!

Day 3 - Great Wall, Mutianyu

Start the day with Breakfast in the hotel, followed by a visit to Tian'anmen Square. Explore one of the world's largest public squares, home to the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, and more.

After breakfast in the hotel, we will drive to Great Wall at Mutianyu (roughly a 1.5 - 2 hour drive). Mutianyu is a section of the Great Wall of China located in Huairou District, approximately 70 kilometres northeast of the centre of Beijing.

​

This section of the Great Wall is a masterpiece of restoration, with 23 original-style watchtowers offering breathtaking views. Tt is the longest fully restored Great Wall section open to tourists. 

​

Lunch today will be again in a Local Chinese restaurant, after which we will make our way back in to town for a visit to In Balance, a cafe in the heart of Soho, Beijing, that promotes dogs are family members to it's customers.

​

You might want to explore the world-famous Sanlitun bar street this evening, which is the liveliest place in Beijing at night!

Day 4 - Beijing Hutongs

After breakfast in the hotel, we spend the morning at the Summer Palace in northwest Beijing. Said to be the best preserved imperial garden in the world, it is the largest of its kind still in existence in China. It is only a short drive (15 km) from central Beijing.

This afternoon we will explore the the old lanes of the Beijing hutongs, followed by a visit to a local Beijing family. Here you will learn Peking Opera Mask Painting as well as Chinese Calligraphy. For lunch we'll be learning how to make Chinese dumplings.

Back to Beijing in the afternoon to visit Qianmen Pedestrian street. The 845-meter long Street runs south from Tiananmen Square, just along the Beijing central axis. It is one of the last remnants of the business centres of old Beijing. You can sample traditional Beijing snacks and will see some time-honoured shops.

 

After dinner, we will take the overnight sleeper train from Beijing to Xi’an.

Day 5 - Xi'an

Your (english speaking) guide will meet you upon arrival into the railway station in Xi'an, and drive you back to the hotel for breakfast. After a rest, you will visit the famous City Wall of Xi'an. Also known as the fortifications of Xi'an, the wall represents one of the oldest, largest and best preserved Chinese city walls.​

After lunch we will visit the Great Mosque of Xi'an - one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved Islamic mosques in China. We'll finish the day with dinner at a local  dumpling restaurant.

Day 6 - Terracotta Army

After breakfast in the hotel, we will visit the must-see Terracotta Army. This dramatic exhibition reveals the secrets behind the 2,000-year-old army of clay statues that guarded the tomb of China's first emperor until a chance discovery in 1974.

In the afternoon we'll visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, a well-preserved ancient building and a holy place for Buddhists.

Day 7 - Xi'an to Beijing

This morning, after breakfast in the hotel, we'll go to the railway station and hop on an express train from Xi’an to Beijing. The trip lasts about 5 hours and lunch is included with your second class ticket. Upon arriving into Beijing Southern railway station, your guide will meet you and get you back to the hotel.

Day 8 - Beijing

After breakfast, it will be time to drive out to the airport and fly home!
